On 15th July 2001 the take-over of 51% of shares in Veba Oel inc. by Deutsche BP inc was agreed between E.ON AG, Düsseldorf and BP p.l.c. Since 1st February 2002, after obtaining the majority shareholding, Deutsche BP inc has managed Aral. In December 2002, to meet the requirements of the cartel office, 494 filling stations were sold to the Polish petroleum company PKN Orlen, and a further 247 to the Austrian company OMV. Despite selling off these service stations, BP retains market leadership in the filling station business, with a total of 2,646 roadside filling stations and 91 motorway service stations.
