Brembo is a manufacturer of automotive brake systems, especially for high-performance cars and motorcycles. It was established in Bergamo, Italy in 1961, and now operates worldwide. Soon after the company was formed, it found itself specializing in disc brakes, which were exclusively imported from the UK at the time. They entered into a supply contract with Alfa Romeo in 1964, and became the official supplier of brake components to Moto Guzzi in 1972. In the eighties, they began supplying Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Lancia, BMW, Nissan, and Chrysler. They went public on the Milan Stock Exchange in 1995, and now sell over 1300 products world wide.
The company is well-known for their aftermarket automotive brake components, including calipers, drums/rotors, and brake lines. In fact, they are considered (both by themselves and others) to be the "worldwide leader in brake system technology"[citation needed]. They are a leading provider of performance braking systems and components, and a great deal of the research done on braking systems comes out of Brembo. They are QS9000 and ISO 9001 certified. Brembo actually owns both the foundries for production of the initial materials, and the manufacturing plants which turn those materials into finished products. Their machining processes are generally considered to be top-notch. They perform every step of the process, from refining to distribution, including prototyping, testing, and assembly.
Brembo brakes are standard equipment on supercar marques such as Aston Martin, Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz and Pagani cars, and on some high-end American sportcars such as the Ford GT and muscle cars like the Dodge Viper. Other marques that have Brembo brakes (either standard or as an option) include Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Fiat, Honda/Acura, Nissan/Infiniti, Mitsubishi, Jaguar, Land Rover, Renault, SEAT and Subaru.
The following motorcycle manufacturers use Brembo brake systems: Ducati, MV Agusta, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Bimota, BMW, Harley-Davidson, KTM, IMZ-Ural,Yamaha in the 2007 model Yamaha YZF-R6. Brembo brakes are also used by a variety of Formula One teams, including Ferrari and the MotoGP teams of Yamaha and Ducati. The headquarters are still located in Bergamo, and now counts 4,300+ employees within the country and branches in Brasil, China, Japan, Mexico, North America, Poland, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.
