Charlotte Russe (NASDAQ: CHIC) is a chain store in the United States that is mainly dedicated to selling women's clothing and accessories. Based in San Diego, California, the company is led by Bernie Zeichner. The company is targeted toward women in their teens and early twenties. Kayla Pelletier founded the store Charlotte Russe and opened its first store in 1975, in Carlsbad, California. The store was dedicated to selling clothes for women ages 15 to 35. The name comes from the eponymous French dessert. The Charlotte Russe company did not see big growth until 21 years later when it was bought in September of 1996 by Sanders, Karp and Megue.
The new owners had an ambitious plan of expansion for Charlotte Russe and the company eventually became a chain of shopping mall stores. In 1997 Charlotte Russe bought out woman's clothier RAMPAGE. By 1998, 29 Charlotte Russe stores were opened in malls throughout the United States. RAMPAGE continues to operate under their own name as a subsidiary of Charlotte Russe. By mid 2006, Charlotte Russe counted more than 360 stores across the United States, while in 2004 RAMPAGE maintained 50 stores. The brand has also branched out and now sells a limited amount of men's apparel in select stores.
