Del Taco is a chain of North American fast-food restaurants specializing in Mexican-style offerings as well as American foods such as burgers, fries and shakes. The first Del Taco restaurant was founded in Barstow, California in 1961 by Ed Hackbarth and David Jameson. Success of the first restaurant led to a second restaurant in Corona, California, this time with a drive-thru window. Originally named Casa Del Taco, founders later reduced the name to Del Taco. The chain now has more than 490 locations across the United States and is second only to Taco Bell in Mexican quick service restaurant market share. A private Nashville, Tennessee based holding named Sagittarius Brands, LLC, which is also the parent company of Captain D's Seafood purchased Del Taco in 2006. Del Taco is led by president Shirlene Lopez, and has its headquarters in the city of Lake Forest, California.
The chain is concentrated in the western part of the US, with some Midwest locations in the St. Louis, Missouri metropolitan area, Illinois and Michigan, and one Southern location in the Nashville, Tennessee metropolitan area. The first Del Taco store in Illinois opened in November 2006 in Machesney Park. Additionally, there is a Del Taco location on Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland, as well as other military installations. Del Taco merged with the Naugles restaurant chain in 1988 and absorbed some of the Naugles menu, including the "Macho" items.
The current menu consists of a range of tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, cheeseburgers, fries, chicken soft tacos, fish tacos, and breakfast burritos. Popular items include the Chicken Soft Taco, Macho Nachos®, Macho Burritos, Macho Tacos, Double Del® Cheeseburger, World Famous Crinkle Cut Fries and Shakes. Del Taco is one of the few fast food chains that serves both Mexican-American southwestern food items and typically Euro-American cuisine such as hamburgers. Del Taco has a significant level of appeal among many vegetarians because of its meatless options.
Del Taco also serves a breakfast menu, including the Macho Bacon Egg and Cheese Burrito, Steak Egg and Cheese Burrito, Shredded Beef Breakfast Burrito, Egg and Cheese Burrito, Bacon Egg and Cheese Quesadilla, and hash brown sticks. Most locations serve breakfast from 11:00 PM to 11:00 AM, but the time breakfast service begins varies by location. Corporate-owned Del Tacos are open 24 hours, while franchise locations hours vary.
