Adobe Illustrator:
Create sophisticated vector artwork for virtually any medium. Capture your ideas easily with industry-standard drawing tools, and experiment freely with flexible new color controls. Experience tight integration with other Adobe applications, and let improved performance help speed you through creating extraordinary graphics.
Adobe Illustrator is a vector-based drawing program developed and marketed by Adobe Systems. Adobe Illustrator was first developed for the Apple Macintosh in 1986 (shipping in January 1987) as a commercialization of Adobe's in-house font development software and PostScript file format. Adobe Illustrator is the companion product of Adobe PhotoShop. PhotoShop's primary function is editing photographs and images, while Illustrator's primary function is drawing and working with type.
This version of Adobe Illustrator was announced on March 27, 2007, and shipped on April 16. The Mac version is a universal binary. New features include Live Color, which provides tools for creating color harmonies based on color theory, and the ability to dynamically apply colors to selected objects and shift the tone of an entire illustration at one time. Remapping controls are also provided for reducing the numbers of colors in an artwork. Also new are better integration with Flash, with named symbol instances and dynamic/static text; improved drawing tools and controls; faster runtime performance; an Eraser tool that works on vector objects; a Crop Area tool; and an improved Isolation Mode for groups and symbol definitions. |

Macromedia
Freehand:
FreeHand MX allows you to concept, design and present stunning graphics for print, Internet and Macromedia Flash projects. Create visually rich, completely editable graphics and take advantage of extensive editing, layout and publishing functions to enjoy a streamlined workflow for multi-publishing design.
Macromedia FreeHand is a computer application for creating two-dimensional vector graphics (use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and polygons to represent images, also known as geometric modeling), oriented to the professional desktop publishing market. It is available in versions for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Its current version, FreeHand 11, is marketed as FreeHand MX, which shows its integration with the Macromedia MX line of products, which also includes Macromedia Flash, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Macromedia Fireworks and more.
Macromedia did not significantly update FreeHand for Studio MX 2004 and did not include it at all in Studio 8. Many believe this is because Fireworks is intended for web development while FreeHand was not intended for the Web. Others believe that because most of FreeHand's vector imaging features were integrated into Macromedia Fireworks, there was no need for both programs (however, Macromedia's continued promotion of FreeHand after Studio 8 was released would seem to suggest otherwise). Fireworks' inability to make vector-oriented .eps or .pdf files suitable for print should confirm this. |

CorelDraw:
Transform ideas into professional results with CorelDraw Graphics Suite X3. With this comprehensive graphics suite, you can confidently tackle a wide variety of projects--from logo creation and Web graphics, to multi-page marketing brochures, or eye-catching signs. From new bitmap-to-vector tracing in Corel PowerTrace, new photo-editing features in Photo-Paint, new suite-wide learning tools, and enhancements in illustration and page layout, this suite combines design capabilities, ease-of-use, and affordability.
CorelDRAW is a vector graphics editor developed and marketed by Corel Corporation of Ottawa, Canada. It is also the name of Corel's Graphics Suite. Its latest version, named X3 (actually version 13), was released in January 2006. CorelDRAW was originally developed for Microsoft Windows and currently runs only on Windows 2000 and newer versions. The current version is X3 (actually version 13.0.0.739) an update on the original January 2006 version making it Windows Vista compatible.
CorelDRAW differentiates itself from its competitors in a number of ways. The first is its positioning as a graphics suite, rather than just a vector graphics program. Second, the package consistently includes a large collection of fonts and clip art. The biggest improvement with CorelDRAW over other graphic software programs is its ability to edit bitmaps. A full range of editing tools allow the user to adjust contrast, color balance, change the format from RGB to CMYK, add special effects such as Vignettes and special borders to bitmaps. Bitmaps can also be edited more extensively using Corel PhotoPaint, opening the bitmap directly from CorelDRAW and returning to the program after saving.
CorelDRAW's chief competitor is Adobe Illustrator. Although they are both vector-based illustration programs, the user experience differs greatly between the two. For instance, CorelDRAW can work with multi-page documents directly; Illustrator only offers a single-page layout view, but it will allow you to divide that large layout in the print options so that it prints on multiple pages. While Illustrator will read CorelDRAW's native file type and vice versa, the translation is almost never perfect. CorelDRAW can open Adobe PDF files: Adobe PageMaker and InDesign, Microsoft Publisher and Word, and several other programs can print documents to PDF using the Adobe PDFWriter printer driver, which CorelDRAW can then open and edit every aspect of the original layout and design. CorelDRAW can also open PowerPoint Presentations with little or no problem.
The current version of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, X3 (actually version 13), contains the following packages:
CorelDRAW: Vector graphics editing software, Corel PHOTO-PAINT: Raster image creation and editing software,
Corel CAPTURE: Enables several methods of image-capture, Corel PowerTRACE: Converts raster images to vector
graphics, Pixmantec RawShooter Essentials: Support for RAW file format.

Adobe Photoshop:
Adobe Photoshop, or simply Photoshop, is a graphics editor developed and published by Adobe Systems. It is the current market leader for commercial bitmap and image manipulation, and is the flagship product of Adobe Systems. It has been described as "an industry standard for graphics professionals." Although originally designed to edit images for paper-based printing, Photoshop can also be used for a wide range of other professional and amateur purposes.
If you use images to communicate or gather and analyze information, then download the new Adobe Photoshop software and experience the power first-hand. Whether you re simply retouching or optimizing an image or building complex composites or animations, you'll have the power and precision you need for superior results. Version CS3 added smart filters, quick selection, refine edge tools, and advanced compositing.
The current (10th) iteration of the program, Photoshop CS3, was released on 16 April 2007. "CS" reflects its integration with other Creative Suite products, and the number "3" represents it as the third version released since Adobe re-branded its products under the CS umbrella. Photoshop CS3 features additions such as the ability to apply non-destructive filters, as well as new selection tools named Quick Selection and Refine Edge that make selection more streamlined. On April 30th, Adobe released Photoshop CS3 Extended, which includes all the same features of Adobe Photoshop CS3 with the addition of capabilities for scientific imaging, 3D, and high end film and video users.
Photoshop CS3 is marketed with three main components of improvement over previous versions: "Work more productively, Edit with unrivaled power, and composite with breakthrough tools." New features propagating productivity include streamlined interface, improved Camera Raw, better control over print options, enhanced PDF support, and better management with Adobe Bridge. Editing tools new to CS3 are the Clone Source palette and nondestructive Smart Filters, and other features such as the Channel Mixer and Vanishing Point were enhanced. Compositing is assisted with Photoshop's new Quick Selection and Refine Edge tools and improved image stitching technology.
CS3 Extended contains all features of CS3 plus tools for editing and importing some 3D graphics file formats, enhancing video, and comprehensive image analysis tools, utilizing MATLAB integration and DICOM file support.
Photoshop functionality can be extended by add-on programs called Photoshop plugins which act like mini-editors that modify the image. The most common type are filter plugins that provide various image effects. They are located in the 'Filter' menu: pre-installed plugins come first, and third-party plugins are placed below the separator. |
