Herlitz ist einer der größten Papier-, Büro- und Schreibwarenproduzenten der Welt. 93 Prozent aller deutschen Haushalte kannten im Jahr 2005 laut Aussage des Unternehmens den Namen Herlitz. Die Firmengruppe Herlitz beging im Jahr 2004 ihr 100-jähriges Firmenjubiläum. Sie geht zurück auf die Gründung einer Papier- und Schreibwaren-Großhandlung durch den gelernten Buchhändler Carl Herlitz in Berlin-Schöneberg. Das Einzelunternehmen Carl Herlitz wurde erstmals 1905 im Berliner Adressbuch aufgeführt unter „Vertreter auswärtiger Häuser der Papier- und Kontorenutensilien-Branche“.
