.............................. Royal Canin
Logo and Trademark..............................
Royal Canin is a worldwide manufacturer and supplier of high quality, specialized dog and cat foods. It was founded in 1967 in the village of Gard, France, by the French veterinary surgeon, Jean Cathary. Its headquarters are now located in Aimargues, France. The company was taken over by the Mars/Masterfood Group in 2002.
The sale of Royal Canin's products takes place through breeders, veterinary practices and specialised distribution outlets, but not in retail food stores. In 2006, Royal Canin had a revenue of over one billion euros - 80% outside of France - with more than 3 200 employees, 70% of which are outside France. Royal Canin recalled products on April 20, 2007 due to the presence of a melamine derivative in the rice protein concentrate in some of its dry pet food products.[4] The South African subsidiary stated, "We at Royal Canin want to express our support and condolences to owners whose pets may have fallen ill or passed away as a result of eating our food."
A 80’s commercial for the brand is extremely famous in France for using Chi Mai, a song by Ennio Morricone originally composed for the French movie Le Professionnel, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo. The relationship between the commercial and the music is so strong in the country that most people would associate the song with the pet food rather than the movie. In 2002, this association was paid tribute to by the French movie Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, where Dogmatix is chasing a legionaire on all fours and in slow motion (like in the commercial) while Chi Mai music is playing in the background.
