.............................. Samsung Yepp MP3 Player Logo and Trademark..............................

YEPP (y: young e: energetic p: passionate p: personal) is Samsung Electronics's digital audio player brand. P2 is a flash based PMP by Samsung Electronics. P2 sports a touchscreen, bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, an FM-radio, Ebook reader, Samsung's DNSe sound engine and video playback capabilities (MP4 and WMV formats). The Samsung YP-P2 comes in 3 colors: which include White, Red (Burgundy), and Black. They come in 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB variants.

Some of the features on this device will include bluetooth stereo headphone compatibility with support for multiple sets of headphones and also sports bluetooth phone connectivity with the ability to use your stereo headphones with your cellphone and speak through the built-in mic on the PMP itself. The PMP also sports BT file transfer. (BT phone connectivity and BT file transfer pending December firmware update). Another nice feature is the drag and drop interface for uploading music to Yp-p2 which makes for a quick and easy interface for managing your media collection.

Z5(F) is a flash based digital audio player, made by Samsung Electronics. The interface for Z5(F), which implements transparency effects seen on supercomputers and most powerful PCs only, was designed by Paul Mercer's Iventor software design company, who reportedly stood behind the interface for iPods. Z5F in contrast to Z5 sports some additional features, such as an FM radio and a dictaphone.

To celebrate the sale of one million Z5Fs, Samsung has auctioned 10 gold-plated Z5Fs in Korea. The player also sports the re-designed YEPP logo. According to a firmware release schedule on the official YEPP website, Z5(F) should have received a text files reader on 30 December, 2006. The firmware for a text reader was instead released in September 2007 (ver 2.51). Supposedly, the player also supports video playback, but Samsung decided to drop the feature off the official release, pending further testing. The feature is expected to be implemented with the future firmware release

Originally manufactured for Napster, and carrying both the Napster and Samsung names, the YP-910 weighs 6 ounces and measures roughly 4.25" by 2.5" by 0.75" -- clearly aiming for the same "shirt pocket" form factor as most PDAs of its time.

Software: The PC drivers were bundled into the included Napster 2.0 install process, so that specific copy of Napster must be installed before you can download songs to this device. After that, you can supposedly maintain its content either via Napster or Windows Media Player. This unit was tied into Napster's digital rights management system, so purchased songs could be downloaded to it but not uploaded to another PC.

Good features: The YP-910 is built around a 20GB USB2 external disk, and thus can be used as additional storage, backed up to the PC, and/or defragmented (though it really needs the external power supply when transferring files). It also has both a built-in MP3 encoder for recording from internal FM radio or line-in, and has a built-in FM modulator (antenna plugs into the line-in jack, oddly enough) to easily couple it to a car stereo. Play time using the internal Lithium/Polymer battery is up to 10 hours; this is affected by use of the transmitter (it can be turned off), playback volume, and audio compression (less-compressed files need to power up the disk more often.)

Bad features: May not be supported by newer versions of Napster (unclear). Plays only MP3 and WMA files, not newer formats. Relatively primitive controls on the box (playlists must be built on the PC and downloaded, and it doesn't let you select by genre). Radio transmitter is weak (usable close to a receiver, but marginal in a market where almost all frequencies are in use). Audio quality is reported to be medocre, though the typical MP3 listener may not notice the difference. Biggest problem: downloading more than 4000 tracks blows the data structures with no warning (you DID back up, right?) so unless you've got a lot of unusually long tracks it will run out of capability long before it runs out of disk space.

If you find one, software is still downloadable from Samsung support, and they can help you reformat a unit that has a damaged filesystem. Originally released in 2003, the YP-55 is an excellent unit for its time, and still a common MP3 Player today in many regions. It features a rotating top which operates the FFWD/REW functions and prevents accidental usage. The latest firmware is version 7.300 which allows for many features which the original did not allow, including playlists and the ability to remember its place in 4 different files at once. These functions have added to it being an ideal audio book player - it can play an audiobook, then record voice or radio or line-in and listen to these recordings, and then go back to the last spot in the audiobook without any searching being necessary. The firmware is upgradable, and can also be user modified with various programs to change things such as the button mapping and graphics.

This player follows the general YEPP convention of H (128mb) I (192mb) V (256mb) X (512mb) - no Z (1GB) model is available, and the X is quite rare today being mostly only ever sold in Russia and Europe. The model I was unique to Canada. The original YP-55 models came with a grey cloth case, but newer models use a plastic case which allows access to all the controls without opening it.
